Day 6 - Varanasi & The Ganga

Ahhh Varanasi. A city that attacks all your senses at once. We are staying at the Ganpati Guest House on the river Ganges.  They sent a car to the airport to pick us up but I was unprepared for what felt like a 1/2 mile hike through heavily congested roadways and winding back alleys before we arrived at the hotel.  They had two young lads meet the car (cars cannot get close to the river) at a designated spot and they pretty much carried our luggage to the hotel.  By the time we got to the hotel, I felt like I had run the NYC Marathon.
We are sharing our sparsely furnished room #12 with a nice little gecko who is living in our bathroom. He has been very shy and I have not gotten a chance to photograph him.  There is a private balcony with two chairs that we can relax on.

We got up early today to go to the river and take some photos.  We walked so far down the river we were too tired to walk back to the hostel so we grabbed a boat ride back :).

Later  that afternoon, after a nice long nap, we ventured out to the back alleyways.  It was a daunting task to have a leisurely walk in the back streets.  You have to look out for feces (human and animal), motorbikes, broken walkways, stray dogs, cows, aggressive beggars, and the ultimate "Varanasi tour guide" who wants to show you around.

Here is Kevin getting taken in by the smooth talking silk salesmen.  They were all over him. :)
